| 08:06 - Everything is packed (including the new tent), so starting today’s part of the trip |
| 08:20 - Checked out of the camp and Brian got his passport back. Now we are off to Switzerland. |
| 10:19 - Reached Ludwigshafen, which puts us back onto the original route used in '79 |
| 10:27-10:33 - First road side stop |
| 11:06 - Reached Karlsruhe. We have now travelled over 1,000 miles. |
| 11:32 - Petrol stop, 16.32 Litres. We also purchased the Swiss motorway Vignette, as without it, we would need to stopped and purchase this at the border. As part of the purchased, Brian almost ended-up paying for someone else’s diesel. |
| 12:00 - Continued after a short rest. |
| 12:23 - The opposite lane on the A5 autobahn was blocked by a car crash. It looked like a small car had rear-ended a truck, but at least it looks like the driver was OK. |
| 12:34 - Pulled over to remove some layers of clothing. The sun is out, the temperature is up. Definitely beats the power weather we had in Frankfurt and Nürburgring. |
| 12:42 - Back on the road |
| 13:11 - Reached Frieburg, another milestone on the original route. |
| 13:53 - *Landmark Event* Reached Swiss border. We had to slow down for the border guard to check the motorway toll vignette. While crossing we saw a motorist who had not purchased a vignette, and the border guards were giving his car the complete check while he purchased it. |
| 15:00 - Reached Bern |
15:09 - Passing the sign for a section of Bern, with the unfortunately name of Wankdorf! I know it was childish, but I remember the teachers were not impressed with a coach load of giggling children. They would have been less impressed by the chuckles of two full grown adults. |
| 15:25 - Reached Thun, the town at the west end of the Thunersee lake, which is the lake west of Interlaken. The lake on the east side is called Brienzersee and has the town Brienz on each north bank. |
16:00ish - Pulled into Interlaken Ost rail station car parked. We exited the car, but I did not recognise any of the buildings or area layout. After a checking all the sign posts walking down the main street, we started to pass hotel after hotel. Option paralysis kicked in and we kept walking, trying to find something familiar and a likely hotel to stay. We past the Tourist Information centre, which had an automated kiosk outside to help find which hotel suits your needs. Unfortunately, they did not list any internet details.
After a further walk, we reach the station at West and at last I started to recognise the area. We look around for any obvious choose hotels, before returning to the Tourist Information centre.
A helpful lady by the name Franciska did a search for us for a holiday with Internet access and was at a reasonable price range. After a brief check through the list, I settled on the Goldey Hotel on the north bank of the river Aare. After getting settles into the hotel, we decided to checkout the shops in Interlaken (reached by a small footbridge next to the hotel). |
